The Benedictine Abbey, situated on the site of Willibrord’s monastery, was built in Lothringian style from 1727 to 1736. It was dissolved in 1797. Since 1899 it has been the Lycée classique d’Echternach.
The Orangerie in the Abbey-garden was the guesthouse of the abbey. Now it is home to several classrooms of a secondary school
This rococo Pavilion stands in the Echternach municipal Park for many decades already. Currently, during summer, it houses an exposition about rural architecture.
The old town is a nice place for a relaxing walk, shopping and eating. It is car-free
The Roman Villa, next to the lake, is one of the biggest in central Europe. It was constructed between the 1st and the 5th century A.C. The ‘pars domestica’ (118 x 62 metres) was excavated in 1975 and is open to visitors.
The ‘Dënzelt’, the historic palace of justice dominates the market square.
The Peter and Paul Church was built on the remains of an ancient roman castle - gaurding the road to Trier (Treverorum) - at around 1000ad. Interesting Gothic and Renaissance frescos can be seen inside.
The medieval town wall with 20 towers, 4 gates and a moat was 2000 metres long. Four of the old towers have been transformed into modern tourist apartments.
There are a few museums and several exhibitions in Echternach. Here the two most known museums:

From the Liboriuskapelle on the German side of the river, you have one of the best views over Echternach. If you walk up the hill to the chapel, you can see rock formations like in Luxembourgs Mullerthal - and also the remains of German bunkers from the second world war, when this hill was heavily fortified to defend Germany's western border. Echternacherbrück is the smaller part of Echternach located in Germany. Today the river separates two countries - in the past this was not always the case. Here everything is cheaper - but it is not Luxembourg.
